DGT has new rules for bikes and electric scooters and has training courses for cyclists

Bicycles can be one of the most efficient, economical, and ecological forms of transport, however, they can also increase traffic congestion if riders don’t adhere to the rules of the road. Cyclists have to share space with cars, lorries, and pedestrians, as well as new personal mobility vehicles such as electric scooters, and because of this, the DGT have introduced some new rules and training courses.

With this in mind, the DGT (Department of Transport) has launched a basic online cycling course on its Aula Abierta platform, for anyone who intends to cycle in urban areas.

The course is taking place from 12th to 21st December and registration is open until tomorrow, Sunday 27th November, and those who participate will receive a certificate for road use.

The course is in Spanish and includes short videos and complementary information to help new cyclists to learn the basics, and help experienced cyclists to discover new, more efficient, and safe techniques.

It also includes a forum for questions and answers, where those taking part can share their experiences, and there will also be tests to make sure that the information given is being understood.

New rules for bikes and electric scooters:
Some road users may not be aware of some new rules and penalties, which failing to comply with, can be severe.

For example, earphones, mobile phones, and other devices must not be used on electric scooters or ebikes, and speed limits and drug and alcohol limits apply to cyclists and those who use any personal mobility device.

Helmets are compulsory, and cyclists are not permitted to ride on pavements, motorways, dual carriageways, in urban tunnels, or across pedestrian crossings, among others.

There are also plans to make reflective clothing obligatory, and issue special permits and certificates for electric scooter users.
