According to the Spanish Met Office (AEMET), a DANA (isolated high-level depression) currently lingering near the Canary Islands will move across the archipelago overnight leaving some mixed weather tomorrow before dissipating.
Meteorologists have described the system as relatively weak, although it has already been responsible for the recent calima affecting the islands. While earlier forecasts suggested it might miss the archipelago, updated models now confirm it will pass over the Canaries during the night and early hours.
Rainfall is expected to be limited. However, some light, scattered showers are forecast over the next 48 hours, particularly where the system interacts with higher terrain on islands such as Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, and La Gomera.
Weekend Outlook: Gradual Improvement
Conditions are expected to stabilise as the weekend progresses:
- Saturday morning: The most unsettled period, with some light rain.
- Saturday afternoon: Residual moisture may bring occasional showers, especially around higher areas such as Mount Teide.
- Sun day: Rapid improvement as the system moves away and merges back into the general atmospheric flow.
There remains a small possibility of isolated thunderstorms during the first half of the day, mainly over the more mountainous islands.
Forecasters stress there is no indication of significant or widespread rainfall, offering reassurance after a changeable start to April. The system is expected to move on quickly, leaving more stable conditions in its wake.
