Canary Islands Sizzle: New record high temperature of 40.5°C in October

The question on everyone's lips is how long will the scorching heat persist in the Canary Islands. The answer, is longer than expected, according to AEMET.

Yesterday (Wednesday), the Sabinosa weather station in La Frontera, El Hierro, recorded the second-highest temperature in all of Spain, reaching 40.5 degrees Celsius, surpassed only by Gipuzkoa in the north of Spain, which reached a scorching 42.8 degrees.

Pending confirmation, this recording of 40.5 degrees in Sabinosa would set a new record for October in the Canary Islands, surpassing the previous record of 39.4 degrees reached at Tenerife Sur Airport on Tuesday.

For the second consecutive day, the Canary Islands dominate the list of highest temperatures recorded by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), with data updated until 5:42pm local time yesterday.

In Tacoronte, temperatures reached 37.3 degrees, in Agaete-Suerte Alta, it touched 37.1 degrees, in Tasarte-La Aldea, 36.8 degrees, in Llano de los Loros-La Laguna, 36.3 degrees, in Vallehermoso-La Dama, 36.3 degrees, in San Bartolomé de Tirajana-El Matorral, 36.2 degrees, in Maspalomas, 36 degrees, and in Maspalomas-Centro Insular de Turismo, 35.9 degrees.

Aemet's summary of yesterday’s weather also highlights strong gusts of wind in Agaete-Suerte Alta and Agulo, where speeds reached 67 kilometres per hour, and in Arure and Sabinosa, reaching 66 kilometres per hour.
