Canary Islands Government takes the first step to ban mobile phones in schools

In a bold move that has sparked widespread debate, the Canary Islands Government is considering a potential ban on mobile phones in schools across the region. The Minister of Education, Poli Suárez, revealed today (Monday) that the government is seriously contemplating the recommendation put forth by the Canary Islands School Council, which suggests not a complete ban but a regulated framework for the use of mobile phones within educational institutions.

In an exclusive interview with EFE, Suárez emphasized that while the School Council's report is advisory in nature, it leans towards resisting a total prohibition of mobile phones in schools. Instead, the report advocates for a cohesive and restrictive regulatory framework governing the personal and recreational use of these devices.

Despite his personal inclination towards a ban on mobile phones in schools, Suárez affirmed that the Ministry will thoroughly examine the report. The analysis will focus on specific aspects, such as ensuring adequate provisions for educational institutions and addressing situations where the use of devices may lead to undesirable behaviour or disruptions within the school environment. A definitive decision on this matter is expected in the upcoming weeks.

"We recognise the importance of consensus and acknowledge existing situations, such as the autonomy of educational institutions," Suárez stated, highlighting the need for a balanced approach that considers both the regulation of mobile phones and the freedom of individual schools.

The proposed general regulatory framework, which advocates for a balanced approach, has garnered support from the Ministry. Suárez expressed the Ministry's endorsement of this initiative, emphasising the necessity of finding common ground to address the challenges posed by the use of mobile phones in educational centres.
