Canary Islands Airports handled nearly 27 million passengers in first half of 2026

The Canary Islands' eight airports handled almost 27 million passengers during the first six months of 2026, according to the latest figures released by AENA.

Between January and June, a total of 26,847,826 passengers travelled through the archipelago's airports, representing a slight 0.7% decrease compared with the same period in 2025.

Despite the small overall decline, the figures underline the continued strength of the Canary Islands as one of Spain's busiest tourist destinations.

Gran Canaria remains the busiest airport

Gran Canaria Airport retained its position as the islands' busiest airport, handling 7,917,801 passengers, a modest increase of 0.5% compared with the first half of last year. It was followed by:

  • Tenerife South: 6,845,121 passengers (-2.9%)
  • Lanzarote: 4,312,800 (-1%)
  • Tenerife North: 3,514,967 (+2.5%)
  • Fuerteventura: 3,271,894 (-3%)
  • La Palma: 778,446 (+4.1%)
  • El Hierro: 147,768 (+2.6%)
  • La Gomera: 59,029 (-1.4%)

Of all passengers travelling on commercial flights, 10.65 million flew on domestic routes, down 0.2%, while 16.08 million travelled on international services, a decrease of 0.8%.

During the first six months of the year, Canary Islands airports handled 240,811 aircraft movements and processed 15,381 tonnes of freight, highlighting the importance of the islands as both a tourism and logistics hub.

June saw slight dip in passenger numbers

In June alone, the Canary Islands recorded 4,153,154 passengers, a decrease of 0.9% compared with June 2025.

Commercial flights accounted for 4.13 million of those travellers, including almost 2 million domestic passengers, up 1.9%, while international passenger numbers fell by 3.4% to just over 2.13 million.

Gran Canaria Airport once again led the way with 1,180,730 passengers in June, followed by:

  • Tenerife South: 935,707 (-5.7%)
  • Lanzarote: 704,815 (-1.5%)
  • Tenerife North: 645,057 (+3.5%)
  • Fuerteventura: 520,539 (-2.1%)
  • La Palma: 128,763 (+10.6%)
  • El Hierro: 26,540 (+2.1%)
  • La Gomera: 11,003 (+1.5%)

The airports also handled 38,629 aircraft movements and 2,395 tonnes of cargo during the month.

Canary Islands buck wider AENA trend

While passenger numbers in the Canary Islands dipped slightly, AENA's wider airport network continued to grow.

Across all of AENA's airports in Spain, the UK and Brazil, the group welcomed 189.9 million passengers during the first half of 2026, an increase of 3.9% compared with the same period last year.

Spain's AENA airport network alone recorded 156.2 million passengers, up 3.7%, showing that the slight fall in Canary Islands traffic contrasts with continued growth across much of the wider network.
