The Tenerife Cabildo has announced the reopening of several hiking trails in Teide National Park today, Wednesday, following safety improvements. Trails numbered 9 (Teide-Pico Viejo), 12 (Mirador de Pico Viejo), 23 (Regatones Negros), and 28 (Chafarí) will be accessible to the public once again.
The reopened paths include the segment of trail 9 (Teide-Pico Viejo) connecting with trails 38 (Cuevas Negras) and 12 (Mirador de Pico Viejo), which had previously been closed. However, certain paths remain off-limits due to the presence of ice and snow, which poses significant risks to visitors.
The closed trails include:
Exceptions for Federated Climbers and Licensed Guides
The restrictions do not apply to federated climbers who meet specific criteria, including possession of basic winter gear (technical clothing, crampons, and an ice axe) and certification of competence from relevant mountaineering federations. These individuals must register on the Tenerife ON app or website and present their credentials to park staff.
Similarly, licensed adventure tourism companies are permitted to operate in restricted areas if their guides hold appropriate qualifications, such as a mid-mountain sports technician or equivalent professional accreditation. These guides are also required to use basic winter gear and be registered with Tenerife ON.
Safety First in Teide National Park
The Cabildo urges caution for all visitors and emphasises that adhering to regulations is crucial for ensuring safety during the winter season. For up-to-date information on trail conditions and access permissions, visitors are encouraged to consult the Tenerife ON platform.
Teide National Park remains a breathtaking destination, but respecting these guidelines is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience in the icy conditions of the winter months.
