British tourist arrested at airport for insurance scam involving 11,000 euro watch

A British tourist has landed himself in legal trouble when he was apprehended by the National Police at Malaga Airport just before he was about to board a flight to London. The 26-year-old man is facing allegations of filing a false police report for the robbery of his watch supposedly valued at 11,000 euros.

The incident unfolded in the baggage check-in area of the airport, where the man was intercepted by officers. This came after he had reported the watch as missing several hours earlier at the Fuengirola police station, setting in motion a chain of events that led to his arrest.

According to the male tourist and his 25-year-old female companion, they claimed they were victims of being drugged and robbed in the nightlife district of Fuengirola in the early hours of Monday 16th October. In their testimony, they told police that after a night out, the man awoke disoriented on a bench in Benalmádena, with his high-value watch conspicuously absent from his wrist, which is worth around 11,000 euros.

His partner arrived back at their hotel during the early morning hours, feeling dizzy, only to realize the following day that her phone was missing. Curiously, her watch wasn’t stolen, seemingly untouched by the alleged thieves.

However, investigators began to raise questions about the veracity of the tourists' claims. A particularly glaring inconsistency in their accounts was the fact that they waited an entire day before reporting the incident, conveniently doing so just a few hours prior to their scheduled flight to the UK. Furthermore, their possession of insurance policies that covered the type of criminal offence they reported to the police added to the suspicions surrounding their claims.

The arrested British tourist now faces legal consequences for his alleged attempt to deceive authorities with a fabricated robbery report, which could result in criminal charges. The investigation is ongoing, and further inquiries will determine the ultimate outcome of this case.
