A British tourist was rescued by emergency crews early this morning (Monday) after falling onto rocks by a sea wall near a hotel in Puerto Calero, in the municipality of Yaiza on Lanzarote.
Emergency services were called at just after 7.00am after the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre, known as CECOES 1-1-2, received reports of the incident.
Local Police officers from Yaiza, firefighters from the Lanzarote Security and Emergency Consortium, and paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service all arrived at the coastal area.
Firefighters carried out the rescue operation and recovered the 54-year-old British man from the rocky sea defence area. He was later taken to Doctor José Molina Orosa Hospital suffering from multiple moderate injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the fall have not been confirmed and no further details about his condition have been released.
Similar incidents have happened across the Canary Islands over the past year, particularly in coastal areas with rocky shorelines and strong Atlantic conditions.
In April 2024, a Czech tourist died in Puerto de la Cruz in Tenerife after reportedly falling into the sea while taking photographs near natural pools. More recently, emergency crews in Lanzarote responded after two tourists were swept into the sea during rough conditions, with one later dying in hospital.
Authorities regularly warn residents and visitors to take extra care around sea walls, cliffs and rocky coastal paths, especially during strong waves or early morning and evening hours when surfaces can be slippery.
