Police in Gran Canaria are investigating after a body was discovered on the coast of Las Palmas this morning (Monday).
The lifeless body was found among the large concrete sea defences, known locally as tetrápodos, along Avenida Marítima in the capital. According to the National Police, the discovery was made just before 10:00am near the Teatro Pérez Galdós.
Officers from the National Police quickly arrived to begin investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. At this stage, authorities have not released any details about the identity of the deceased or the possible cause of death.
Units from the Local Police in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria were also sent to the area. Due to the ongoing emergency response, the right-hand lane of the GC-1 motorway, at the height of Calle Munguía and heading north, was temporarily closed to allow emergency services to work safely.
The discovery comes less than a year after another body was found in a similar location. On 30th October last year, the remains of a man in an advanced state of decomposition were discovered among the same coastal sea defences near the Triana area, at the junction of Calle Munguía and Avenida de Canarias.
In that case, the National Police took over the investigation after an off-duty Guardia Civil officer, who was walking nearby, noticed a strong smell coming from the rocks. Upon checking the area, he discovered evidence of blood and, a short distance away, a passport and a mobile phone left abandoned.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Monday’s discovery, and further details are expected once identification procedures and forensic examinations have been carried out.
