Boat fire near Puerto Calero leaves four rescued with mild hypothermia

Four people were rescued on Thursday evening after a pleasure boat caught fire near Puerto Calero, Lanzarote. The incident, which occurred at around 8:30pm, saw emergency teams from EMERLAN, Guardia Civil, Local Police, and the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) respond swiftly to the scene.

According to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES), the four people on board, three men and one woman, were safely evacuated by a nearby vessel. While all showed signs of mild hypothermia, they declined further medical treatment and did not need to go to hospital.

The fire broke out while the boat was close to the entrance of Puerto Calero, a luxury marina on Lanzarote’s south-west coast. The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

This is not the first such incident in this area. On 6th August 2024, a boat fire in the same area led to an explosion in the engine room, leaving two men in their 40s with moderate burns.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether there are any safety concerns or patterns emerging from these events, but the latest fire has once again raised questions over marine safety in the region.

Puerto Calero is located approximately 10 kilometres from Arrecife, the island’s capital, and 20 kilometres from Yaiza. It is a popular mooring spot for both local and visiting yachts, known for its high-end facilities and proximity to Lanzarote’s main tourist areas.
