Beach closed in the south of Tenerife due to high levels of water contamination

The local authorities in Granadilla de Abona have temporarily closed La Jaquita Beach in El Médano after water quality tests revealed levels of Escherichia coli (E. coli) exceeding the limits permitted under public health regulations.

The Town Council announced yesterday, Tuesday, that the closure is a precautionary measure intended to ensure the safety of swimmers and other beachgoers. A follow-up analysis has already been coordinated with the specialised laboratory responsible for water testing, in order to confirm when conditions return to safe levels for bathing.

While awaiting the results of the new tests, the Council urges the public to fully comply with all guidance and restrictions issued by beach safety and lifeguard personnel.

Authorities will announce the official reopening of the beach once it is confirmed that water quality has been restored.

What is E. coli and Why Is It Dangerous?

Escherichia coli (E. coli) is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless, certain types, such as E. coli O157:H7, can cause serious illness.

Infections typically occur through the ingestion of contaminated water or food. When harmful strains of E. coli are present in seawater, they can pose a risk to swimmers, especially if the water is accidentally swallowed or comes into contact with open wounds or mucous membranes.

Symptoms of infection can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, and fever. In rare cases, complications such as haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS) can develop, which may lead to kidney failure, particularly in young children and the elderly.

Temporary beach closures like this one are an important public health measure to prevent such infections.
