Gran Canaria firefighters saved the life of a baby who was close to losing consciousness after suffering asphyxia during a terrifying roadside emergency in the early hours of New Year’s Day, near the Arinaga fire station in the east of the island.
The incident unfolded at around 1.30 am yesterday (Thursday) as parents desperately rushed their baby towards the Maternal and Child Hospital in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. While driving at speed, they came across a fire engine from the Arinaga station and immediately stopped to seek help, fearing their child was struggling to breathe.
Firefighters reacted instantly, carrying out life-saving first aid and basic life support manoeuvres as the baby’s condition rapidly deteriorated. At the same time, they alerted the 112 Canarias emergency coordination centre and requested a medicalised ambulance from the Canary Islands Emergency Service.
During the critical minutes that followed, crews from the Gran Canaria Emergency Consortium managed to stabilise the baby while remaining in constant contact with medical professionals. Two ambulances soon arrived and carried out an urgent transfer to the Maternal and Child Hospital, where the baby was admitted for further tests and monitoring.
Firefighters from the Arinaga station later described the intervention as deeply emotional, saying that beginning the year by saving a baby’s life was a powerful reminder of the importance of well-trained and closely coordinated public emergency services.
