Access to affordable housing remains one of the biggest challenges in Tenerife, and now the Cabildo is stepping up efforts with another new public development in the south of the island, by approving plans for 47 social housing units in Granadilla de Abona, aimed at easing pressure on the rental market.
The project, known as Cuevas Cho Portada, will be built in the Los Hueros area and is intended for affordable subsidised long-term rental, one of the key solutions being prioritised by authorities.
Nearly €10 million investment
The development will involve an investment of around €9.6 million, forming part of a wider strategy to spread housing projects across the island rather than concentrating them in a single location.
Officials say this approach is designed to improve territorial balance and ensure more communities benefit from new developments.
Fast-tracked process
A key feature of the scheme is its urgent administrative processing, which will shorten timelines and help bring construction forward more quickly.
The contract will be awarded through an open procedure, allowing different companies to bid for the work.
Hundreds more homes in the pipeline
This is just one of several housing initiatives currently underway. According to the Cabildo, they have more than 300 homes already in progress across Tenerife so far this year.
111 properties have been put out to tender in areas such as La Victoria de Acentejo, Arafo, Granadilla and El Sauzal.
Meanwhile, construction contracts have already been awarded for 191 homes in Santiago del Teide, Los Realejos, El Rosario, San Miguel de Abona and Güímar.
Also, as previously reported, two new projects have been given the go ahead in Adeje and Arona for a further 110 affordable properties for residents.
Housing pressure growing
The push for public housing reflects a growing reality across the Canary Islands: finding affordable accommodation, especially to rent, is becoming increasingly difficult.
Rising prices and limited supply have turned housing into one of the most pressing social issues on the island, particularly for residents and workers struggling to secure long-term homes.
