Age in Spain, the leading nonprofit organisation supporting English-speakers across all of Spain, is taking proactive steps to help UK nationals living in Spain, including the Canary Islands, to navigate the renewal process for the Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero (TIE).
The TIE is the biometric card that proves a non-Spanish national’s legal residency in Spain. With thousands of UK national’s resident in Spain needing to renew their TIE cards in the upcoming months, Age in Spain is offering essential support including a clear step-by-step video guide, two written guides, and access to its Infoline service for any additional questions. These resources ensure a smooth and stress-free renewal process.
Important Information on the TIE Exchange for UK nationals
Since July 6th, 2020, a new residency document has been available for British people resident in Spain, following the UK’s exit from the EU. A plastic TIE card (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) replaced the previous paper EU Residence Certificate and green residency card.
In July 2020, Spain started issuing TIE cards for UK nationals who were already living in Spain and protected under the Withdrawal Agreement. Those who had not yet been granted the right to permanent residency were given a card valid for five years. The first batches of those cards are now coming up for renewal.
Check the expiry date on the front of your TIE NOW!
You can mark your calendar with the dates when you can renew: 30 days before the expiry date and up to 90 days after.
To help people with the renewal process, Age in Spain has prepared a video guide that walks applicants through the entire renewal process, including making an appointment, step-by-step completion of the required forms, and collecting the new TIE.
You can find the new video guide and two information guides related to the TIE process at the bottom of the Age in Spain homepage at www.ageinspain.org.
