Adeje Town Hall has announced major improvements to rubbish and litter collection, street cleaning, and the upkeep of public areas across the municipality, thanks to a new €13 million annual contract designed to modernise and improve these essential services.

The eight-year contract, awarded to the joint venture between Ascan Servicios Urbanos and Torrabonaf SL, with the option to extend to ten years, represents one of the largest managed by the council.

Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga described it as “a contract designed to achieve a complete improvement of a service of vital importance, one that must meet one of the main demands of our residents.”

More staff, more vehicles, more frequent service

One of the standout features of the new deal is the increase in staff, rising from 171 to 209 workers, alongside the introduction of a brand-new fleet of vehicles, many of which will be hybrid or electric.

Collection of household rubbish will now take place seven days a week in the busiest areas, including Adeje town, La Postura, and Costa Adeje. Problematic public areas will see additional cleaning measures, with more responsive systems put in place to deal with residents’ concerns.

The contract also includes a wide range of additional services, such as the cleaning of ravines in urban areas, seaweed removal from beaches, clearing of rural tracks and verges, and a special street and pavement cleaning system designed to quickly remove waste and dirt while adapting to the needs of each neighbourhood.

A focus on sustainability and efficiency

According to the councillor for Works and Services, Epifanio Díaz Hernández, the new system has been carefully designed to meet strict sustainability and waste management standards. The plan also safeguards existing jobs while creating new ones, representing a workforce increase of over 30%.

Rubbish collection and cleaning routes will be optimised to improve efficiency, and new technologies will be introduced to monitor possible service disruptions. The contract also includes carbon footprint offsetting and prioritises the introduction of modern, environmentally friendly vehicles.

Stronger links with residents

Another key element of the contract is the creation of new communication channels with residents. Feedback from the public will be considered essential in evaluating and improving the service, ensuring it adapts to the real needs of the community.

Adeje Town Hall will also be investing around €4 million more each year than before to guarantee these improvements.

Both the Mayor and Councillor Díaz Hernández stressed that the upgrades were long overdue: “We have an obligation to resolve them as effectively and diligently as possible, aware that the service must improve and that there are situations to be corrected. That is our main challenge and we will not stop until we achieve it.”

The new system is expected to be up and running within the next two months, with noticeable improvements anticipated soon after.
