A suspected explosives alert in a cave in northern Gran Canaria prompted a response from the Guardia Civil after hikers discovered objects marked “danger”, which later turned out to be harmless props used for recreational activities called Airsoft.

The incident took place on 12th February in the municipality of Moya, when two hikers came across several suspicious-looking items inside a cave and alerted the authorities.

According to the Guardia Civil Command in Las Palmas, the walkers reported the discovery to the Santa María de Guía main police post, triggering the appropriate security protocol.

Specialist bomb squad deployed

Following the report, the Operational Services Centre (COS) in Las Palmas activated the Explosive Ordnance Disposal and CBRN Defence Unit (GEDEX-NRBQ), which travelled to the site to assess the situation and secure the area.

Specialists inspected the cave and carefully examined the objects that had raised the alarm.

After analysing the materials, the team confirmed that none of the items posed any explosive, chemical, biological or radiological risk.

Props used for tactical games

Authorities later determined that the objects were stage props used for recreational simulations, specifically equipment commonly used in Airsoft or tactical training-style events.

The situation was therefore classified as a false alarm, and officials confirmed that there was no danger to public safety or to the surrounding natural environment.

While the incident ended without risk, the Guardia Civil reminded the public that reporting suspicious items is important so that specialists can quickly assess any potential threat.
