A police dog from Santa Cruz’s Canine Unit has helped officers arrest a 41-year-old man who was carrying more than 2.2 kilograms of hashish hidden inside a backpack.
The incident happened on Tuesday at the junction of Calle Valentín Sanz and Calle La Palma, when the detection dog began following the man spontaneously during a routine patrol. The dog then clearly marked him as carrying illegal substances, prompting its handler to intervene.
When questioned, the man admitted he had hashish in his backpack. Officers discovered four separate blocks of the drug weighing a total of 2.2kg.
A nearby National Police unit assisted with the security search while Local Police officers checked the contents of the bag and carried out identification procedures.
Along with the drugs, the man was found with personal documents, plane tickets for a flight scheduled that same day, a mobile phone and €50 in cash.
After the drugs were weighed, the suspect was taken to a health centre for a routine check-up and then transferred to police headquarters, where he was placed at the disposal of the courts.
