The Tenerife Cabildo has implemented a special access control system at Teide National Park, which will remain in force until Friday (19th December), operating daily from 11.00am to 6.00pm.
The measure is designed to guarantee visitor safety, ensure orderly access to the protected area and safeguard its natural environment. After 6.00pm, all access roads to the National Park will be closed until the following morning.
Strong first day with heavy staffing
Yesterday was the first day of the operation, when more than 125 personnel took part in the controls. This included environmental agents, Guardia Civil officers, Canary Islands Police, Local Police from La Orotava, members of the BRIFOR wildfire brigade, rural wardens, Civil Protection volunteers, road staff, park rangers, Red Cross teams and emergency coordination services.
The Cabildo reported that the day passed smoothly and without any major incidents, confirming the effectiveness of the plan during its initial phase, coinciding with an influx of visitors attracted by snowfall in the park.
Road cleaning operations underway
At the same time, the Cabildo’s Roads Department has deployed road-cleaning teams on rotating shifts across several routes to keep road surfaces in safe driving condition, particularly in areas affected by snow and ice.
Island Emergency Plan on pre-alert
The Department of Environment, Sustainability, Security and Emergencies has reminded the public that the Island Emergency Plan for Tenerife (PEIN) remains activated on a pre-alert basis as a precautionary measure since 11.00am on Tuesday.
Residents and visitors are advised to follow self-protection guidance and respect current restrictions affecting walking trails, forest tracks and protected natural areas.
Access routes and traffic restrictions
Access to Teide National Park is being managed as follows:
Northern side:
- Ascent via the TF-21 from La Caldera to Portillo Bajo
- Descent via the TF-24, connecting to the TF-523
South-western side:
- Access permitted via TF-38 (Chío) and TF-21 (Vilaflor) up to the cable car area
- Descent via the same route
During the operation:
- Public transport services remain suspended
- Tourist coaches, non-essential heavy vehicles, caravans, motorhomes and recreational vehicles are not allowed
The Cabildo has thanked the public for their cooperation and urged visitors to plan journeys in advance and follow instructions from staff on site, helping to protect one of Tenerife’s most important natural landmarks.
