Airport operator AENA has confirmed that €867 million will be invested in Tenerife South Airport and Tenerife North Airport between 2027 and 2031. The total investment planned for all Canary Islands airports during this period is €1.8 billion, as outlined in the newly approved DORA 3 (Airport Regulation Document).
Of the funds allocated to Tenerife, €438 million will be used specifically for expansion projects at both airports. Tenerife South will receive €289 million in the 2027–2031 period to begin its long-awaited extension.
The remaining amount needed to complete the terminal’s full renovation, bringing the total to €550 million, will be included in the next regulatory cycle, DORA 4.
AENA says the work at Tenerife South will significantly improve the airport by nearly 50% more terminal space, new check-in areas, better operational flow, and redesigned access roads.
Improvements at Tenerife North
For Tenerife North, AENA has planned €149 million for upgrades up to 2031, with the rest of the €250 million total investment scheduled for the following period.
The project will expand the check-in hall, security filters, boarding area, and baggage reclaim, as well as improve access roads in coordination with works on the TF-5 motorway.
Investments Across the Smaller Islands
Other airports in the province will also see major investment:
- La Palma Airport: €89 million for terminal improvements, airfield works, and new access and platform areas.
- El Hierro Airport: €14.8 million for safety upgrades, LED lighting, and wastewater system improvements.
- La Gomera Airport: €19.2 million for projects including a photovoltaic solar park and safety enhancements.
AENA says these amounts represent a significant increase compared with the previous investment cycle.
Ticket Prices to Rise Slightly
To fund these upgrades, AENA has proposed a small increase in airport charges, averaging under 30 cents per international passenger, and less than 10 cents for inter-island flights.
Nationwide, AENA has also confirmed a 3.82% annual rise in the fees charged to airlines until 2031, an average of 43 cents per traveller. Airlines have criticised the increase, having requested a 4.9% reduction instead.
The rise has also been rejected by Coalición Canaria, which has demanded an urgent meeting with the PSOE to review what it considers a breach of the Canary Islands economic and infrastructure commitments.
