AEMET extends heat wave warnings to the entire Canary Islands

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated the warnings for the Canary Islands before the arrival of the heat wave that is already hitting mainland Spain, where the highest temperatures in the last 75 years are being recorded. In the case of the Islands, warnings range from yellow to red, not only for heat but also for haze and coastal phenomena.

According to AEMET, there will be a general increase in temperatures due to the entry of an African air mass that will begin to affect, as of today, the Canary Islands, which will last for several days, until at least Saturday (12th August).

The peaks and inland areas of Gran Canaria will reach 40°C, especially in the east, west, and south of the island. This red notice will be activated from 11:00am until 8:00pm.

However, the extreme heat will not only affect Gran Canaria, highs of 38°C are expected in the following places:

· Southeast of Lanzarote

· Southeast of Fuerteventura

· Summits and south of La Gomera

· Summits and south of El Hierro

· El Paso and the western slope of La Palma

· The east, south, and west of Tenerife

· The metropolitan area and Anaga in Tenerife

The north of Tenerife, north of Gran Canaria, and east of La Palma are not on this list as they are only expected to reach 36°C.
