The emergency services have confirmed that a man died on Tuesday afternoon after getting into difficulty while swimming at Punta Brava in Puerto de la Cruz (Tenerife). The incident occurred at around 3:00pm and has prompted renewed warnings about dangerous sea conditions across the archipelago.
Emergency operators received a call reporting that a body was floating approximately 30 metres from the coastline at Punta Brava, a popular but often rough-water area on the northern coast of the island.
Lifeguards and firefighters immediately launched a sea rescue and managed to reach the man before the arrival of rescue helicopters. They brought him back to shore, where SUC medical personnel were already waiting to provide treatment.
Paramedics found the swimmer in cardiac arrest and began advanced resuscitation procedures, but despite their efforts they were unable to revive him. His death was confirmed at the scene.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, and no further details have been provided regarding the circumstances that led to him being found adrift.
The fatal incident comes as the Canary Islands Government issued an alert for dangerous coastal conditions across all islands. Authorities are urging the public to take extreme caution near the coastline, avoid risky swimming areas, and respect warning flags and signage. They emphasise that many recent emergencies have occurred when people underestimated the strength of the sea.
