Drivers in Tenerife have received an unconventional Christmas gift from the DGT this year, as the popular social media account @TenerifeVial, shared an image of a newly installed speed camera on the TF-2 motorway, accompanied by a cheeky festive message: “The DGT in Tenerife wishes you a Merry Christmas.”
This new radar joins a growing list of traffic enforcement devices in the Canary Islands, a region often highlighted for its prolific speed cameras.
Tenerife’s most active device, located on the TF-13, has recorded an astonishing 14,237 fines, according to the latest report from Automovilistas Europeos Asociados (AEA).
However, Gran Canaria takes the crown for the most active enforcement in the archipelago. The speed camera at kilometre 42.2 on the GC-1 motorway issues over 33,000 fines a year, but these figures pale in comparison to Spain’s national leader, a radar on the A-381 in Cádiz, which logged a staggering 79,258 violations last year.
Mixed Reactions Among Drivers
The installation of new speed cameras, especially during the festive season, has sparked debate among local drivers. While some view them as essential for road safety, others criticise their placement as purely revenue-focused.
Regardless of opinions, the DGT emphasizes the importance of observing speed limits, not just to avoid fines but to ensure safety for all road users.
As the holiday season approaches, the message is clear: slowing down could save you more than just a hefty fine, it could make the roads safer for everyone.
