A 36-year-old man is found dead in Gran Canaria due to the high temperatures

A 36-year-old man has been found dead in the town of Fataga in Gran Canaria, believed to be the first victim of the heatwave in the Canary Islands. He was discovered by a passerby, who raised the alarm, lying on his back in the sun in an alley, where he allegedly collapsed, with no vital signs.

The Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received an alert at 2:55pm and immediately dispatched two ambulances, medical personnel from the local health centre, as well as patrols from the Local and National Police to the location given in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.

Unfortunately, despite intensive efforts by the rescue and medical teams, they were unable to resuscitate the man and certified his death shortly after. Paramedics are suggesting that the man died from heat exhaustion as temperatures were measured at 42.5 degrees at the time of his death, highlighting the intensity of the heat that is affecting the region.

The deceased has been identified as a local resident in the area with the initials M.M.A., and an autopsy will confirm the cause of death.

This tragic incident coincides with the declaration of a maximum heat alert issued by the Government of the Canary Islands for the entire archipelago. With unusually high temperatures, reaching 45.1 degrees in Maspalomas and 44.8 degrees in La Aldea de San Nicolás, the authorities have been warning the population about the dangers of prolonged exposure to the sun and the importance of taking precautionary measures.

It also serves as a grim reminder about the risks associated with high temperatures and the importance of staying hydrated and protected from the sun during periods of intense heat.
