The body of a 25-year-old man was recovered yesterday after his car plummeted down the Risco de Famara cliffs in Teguise, Lanzarote. The alarm was raised at around 11:30 am on Tuesday, sparking a large-scale emergency operation.
Firefighters, Teguise Local Police, the Guardia Civil, ambulance crews from the Canarian Emergency Service (SUC), and a GES rescue helicopter were all deployed in the desperate search. Teams were forced to descend on foot along the steep and treacherous trail to the La Poceta ravine, where poor visibility and harsh weather conditions made the terrain even more dangerous.
When the wreckage was finally located, firefighters discovered the victim’s body outside the vehicle, believed to have been thrown clear by the force of the crash. His remains were airlifted from the ravine by the GES helicopter and transferred to the airport for onward transport to official facilities.
The vehicle itself was left in an unstable position on the cliffside, and firefighters worked to secure it, moving it into a trench to remove the risk of further accidents for hikers or visitors in the area. Personal belongings and documents recovered from the car were later handed over to the Guardia Civil barracks in Costa Teguise.
The exact cause of the crash has not yet been confirmed. However, authorities are reminding the public of the importance of seeking help in moments of crisis. Spain’s 024 helpline is available free of charge and in total confidence, 24 hours a day, to anyone struggling with suicidal thoughts, as well as to friends and relatives who may be worried about a loved one.
