217 campers evacuated in Tenerife due to risk of wildfire

217 people have been evacuated from various campsites and recreational areas in forestal areas under the orders of the Tenerife Cabildo today (Wednesday), as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety amid a heightened risk of forest fires.

The decision to evacuate came in response to weather forecasts predicting temperatures soaring up to 34°C. Given these conditions, the Cabildo has activated Level 2 wildfire prevention measures, effective from today until next Monday (29th July), which among other things, prohibit stays in recreational and camping areas.

The evacuation involved 64 people from Madre del Agua in Granadilla, 36 from El Lagar in Icod de los Vinos, and 117 from the Scout-Orticosa Centre in Arafo. The Cabildo's President, Rosa Dávila, emphasised that these steps were crucial to safeguarding the public from potential wildfire threats.

Stringent Fire Prevention Measures

The level 2 measures also ban outdoor fires, including barbecues, bonfires, gas stoves, and other equipment that could spark a fire. Furthermore, the use of pyrotechnics in high-risk areas and smoking in recreational zones, campgrounds, trails, viewpoints (miradors), and other public forest areas is strictly prohibited.

Additionally, recreational vehicle access to forest trails and events such as sports, pilgrimages on forest paths, and cross-country activities are not permitted under these measures.

Health and Safety Recommendations

Authorities urge the public to follow health and safety guidelines, which include staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty, and using sunscreen, sunglasses, and lightweight, light-coloured clothing. People are also advised to seek shade and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours (12 til 4pm).

Special attention should be given to more vulnerable people, such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses, who are more susceptible to extreme heat.
