10,000 more migrants have arrived in the Canary Islands by boat than in 2023

The Canary Islands have received a massive 11,704 irregular immigrants to their coasts so far this year, a figure that is 10,102 higher (+730%) compared to the same period in 2023, when 1,602 people arrived on the archipelago.

They have done so in 176 small precarious, 139 more than the 37 that arrived in the first month and a half of last year, as reported in the fortnightly update released on Friday by the Ministry del Interior.

In total, 13,302 migrants have arrived irregularly in Spain, which translates into 10,764 more people than last year, when 2,538 were registered. Of the total, 12,957 have arrived by sea in 261 boats and the rest have arrived by land to Ceuta (342) and Melilla (3).

Arrivals by sea to the peninsula and the Balearic Islands amount to 1,252, which represents an increase of 55% compared to the 808 registered in 2023.

No migrants have arrived in Ceuta by sea in 2024, unlike the 12 who had done so at this time of year in 2023, and only one has arrived in Melilla by this means, compared to 3 in the same period last year.
