The President of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, said earlier on today (Wednesday) that no changes in the alert levels for coronavirus are foreseen in any of the islands, since the data indicates that "there is no increase” in relation to the previous week, therefore there will be consolidation whilst waiting for the data over the next few days, with the hope that we are "bending the curve".
However, he did confirm that in the weekly Governing Council meeting tomorrow, Thursday, the situation will still be analyzed with the mandatory health report, although he clarified that the previous week was "a consolidation of positives" and today there is "a decrease in infections over the last few days with compared to the previous week”.
Even so, he admitted that there is currently big pressure on the health service, especially in the islands that are "the worst infected, which is in Tenerife and La Palma, but Gran Canaria is also increasing quickly." He clarified that "the pressure in hospitals and ICUs is always higher in the following weeks than when the curve begins to bend."
In regard to the rulings last week of the TSJC, Torres said that although he "does not" share their judgments, they make their decisions which they consider to be correct. He did say he understands why they’ve made some of them, as the Canary Islands has been the most favourable region in terms of the development of the pandemic on many occasions by, he said, “implementing measures such as the alert levels, the perimeter closure of the islands, and the curfew, two of which they’ve now over ruled."
Two islands have reached 70% immunisation:
On the other hand, he was pleased to point out that El Hierro and La Palma have already immunized 70% of their target population, and that La Gomera and La Graciosa will have done so soon too. He also confirmed that it won’t be long before all of the islands are at this point, as currently almost 77% have had their first jab and 62.7% have had both. At this point the president once again asked for citizens to continue using their masks, observe social distancing and to be respectful of the regulations and others.
