Policeman who is part of immigration team in Gran Canaria dies of Covid

A 51-year-old police officer who had come over from Malaga to help reinforce protocols for the arrival of immigrants in Gran Canaria, has died of Covid-19 upon his return home to the mainland to see his family for New Year and Kings Day.

The officer named as Antonio Jesús M., began to feel very ill on his return from Gran Canaria, according to an official press release from the Police Intervention Unit (UIP) in Malaga, and following health protocols, had an antigen test on December 30th, which was negative.

The agent, who is stationed in Malaga Group V known as 'riot control', however, was still ill and showed symptoms compatible with Covid-19, so two days after the first test, he underwent a second test, this time a PCR, which was positive.

The situation worsened considerably within hours, and he was admitted to a hospital, where he was for barely three days, because he died as a result of Covid-19. There is no evidence of any other positives among the rest of Antonio Jesús M.'s colleagues, who have all been tested.

As is customary in these cases, both the National Police and the Ministry of the Interior have lamented on social networks this new loss due to the coronavirus pandemic, expressing condolences to family, friends and colleagues, saying: "The risk that the police assume against this pandemic is unquestionable, and the Government must do more to protect them.”
