Covid update: New cases fall to 606 and no deaths in the last 24 hours

The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 606 new cases in the Canary with 448 medical discharges meaning there are now 11,868 active cases in the archipelago. Of the new cases 303 are in Tenerife, 259 are in Gran Canaria, 21 in Fuerteventura, 19 in Lanzarote, 4 in La Palma and none in La Gomera or El Hierro.

The most concerning statistic is that there are now 421 Covid patients in hospital wards, which is an increase of 15% over the weekend, and 69 in ICU, an increase of 10%. Although these look like small numbers in relation to the number of cases, the pressure on hospitals is increasing.

The good news is that four out of ten young people living in the Canary Islands between 20 and 29 years old have now had at least one dose of the vaccine after 15,000 were administered over the weekend without an appointment needed. The SCS has also ci¡onfirmed that they are starting to vaccinate 12 to 15 year olds in La Palma, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura as they move in to Group 13 of the vaccination plan.

The younger generation are now responding to requests to be vaccinated, maybe because they can see that the Covid Certificate is going to be requested for more and more things in the future in countries across Europe, and that it is the only way that a ‘normality’ can return.

Earlier today the president of the Canary Islands, Angel Victor Torres said that the Government are looking at the possibility of insisting that all civil servants be vaccinated for their job, and that anyone who refuses to be vaccinated "is selfish and a danger to themselves, and is a danger to the community, which is unfair because responsible persons cannot pay the consequences for the actions of those who do not want to be vaccinated.”

Torres also said that he hopes that the signs being shown in Spain will duplicate here in the Canary Islands and over the next few days we will see a ‘bending of the curve’ in regards to new infections.
