Covid update: It feels like we have turned a corner!

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health there have been 96 new cases and no Covid related deaths reported in the Canary Islands today as the downward trend continues in the archipelago. Of the new cases, 49 are in Tenerife, 29 are in Gran Canaria, 14 in Lanzarote, 3 in Fuerteventura, 1 in La Palma, and none in La Gomera and El Hierro.

Due to 230 people being medically discharged, active cases have dropped to 1,807 in the islands, with 227 in hospital wards, 47 in ICU, and 1,533 in home isolation. The Accumulated Incidence rates have dropped again for the islands, with the IA7 at 38.37 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and the IA14 at 80.79.

The Canary Islands has registered the lowest number of deaths from coronavirus in May since August last year, when 13 deaths were recorded. So far this month there has been 26 deaths, which is half of those in April, and 75% less than in January, which was the deadliest month of the pandemic, with 103 Covid related deaths. The lowest month was July 2020 with no deaths, and June of last year when two deaths were recorded.

The data shows a gradual decline and is an example of the positive impact of vaccination in the archipelago, and is also reflected in the accumulated positive cases of coronavirus in the islands, as so far in May, the islands have recorded 2,775 positive cases, which is the lowest number of cases since March 2020 when 1,493 cases were recorded.
