Covid update: The data for the Government review shows 914 new cases today

The latest data from the Ministry of Health, which will be reviewed by the Governing Council to decide any changes in the alert levels in the islands, shows new highs that weren’t even thought of at any previous point of the pandemic. 914 new cases have been reported in the islands as the rate of contagion continues to increase, as does the presence of the Delta variant of the virus.

Of the new cases, 510 have been detected in Tenerife, 337 in Gran Canaria, 22 in Lanzarote, 21 in Fuerteventura, 15 in La Palma, 8 in La Gomera, and 1 in El Hierro. With 396 medical discharges and no deaths today, this means that there are 9,674 actives cases in the islands, with 402 in hospital wards and ICU and 9,272 in hospital wards.

The IA7 for the Canary Islands is now 220.00 and the IA14 is 390.91, but the one that stands out, particularly because the Government are meeting today, is Tenerife where the IA7 is 283.76 but the IA14 is 508.40 with 4,711 new cases on the island in the last two weeks.

This level of incidence rate has a significance because as we know the Government has appealed against the decision of the TSJC by requesting a curfew for Levels 3 and 4 from the Supreme Court, which they are waiting for an answer for, and we know that they are reviewing measures due to the change of evolution of the virus due to vaccination. We also know that they have had the option to put Tenerife in Level 4, but haven’t due to other parameters and for economic reasons.

However, officially, because the 14-day incidence rate is over 500 with an upward trend on the island, the Canary Islands Government can request a state of alarm for Tenerife which would give them far more ‘tools’ to implement without having to request them from the courts. This doesn’t mean they will, and in fact, it is anyone’s guess what they will decide today taking into account that the epidemiological data is beyond anyone’s expectations.
