Covid update: New cases continue to decrease but 7 deaths in Tenerife today

The latest data from the Ministry of Health reports of 318 new cases in the Canary Islands today, a decrease of 283 compared to last Wednesday when 602 new infections were reported. In the last 18 days, there has been a continuous decline in the number of cases detected. However, there is a continuous upward trend in the number of fatalities with seven Covid related deaths verified today, all of them in Tenerife, where more than 500 people have now lost their lives due to the coronavirus.

According to their official data, the seven deaths are three women aged 64, 86, and 88 years old, and four men aged 53, 75, 82 and 86 years old. All were already admitted to hospital which is why hospitalisation stats have dropped by the same number, and all had previous pathologies, except for the 53-year-old man.

Active cases have dropped today also, due to their being 800 people medically discharged from home isolation, leaving 15,233 people who have currently tested positive for the virus in the islands. More good news is that incidence rates have continued to fall in the islands with the IA7 now down to 113.10 and the IA14 at 292.38, and La Gomera is about to become the first island to reduce its 14-day incidence rate back below 50 and be in the ‘safe destination’ bracket for tourism.

According to the president of the Canary Islands Government, Ángel Víctor Torres, in the last few hours the Canary Islands have reached the goal of having 70% of the target population over 12 years of age fully vaccinated against Covid-19.

On his Twitter profile, Torres has posted: “The Canary Islands has reached 70% of the target population over 12 years of age with a complete vaccination schedule against Covid-19 today. There are 1,374,040 people immunised. CONGRATULATIONS! THANK YOU to the Canarian population, and THANK YOU to the Canary Islands Health Service”.

The Ministry of Health have made a similar post on social media, saying: “Thank you to all the people who have made it possible”.
