Covid update: Data supports Governments decision for alert Level changes

The third wave of the Covid pandemic continues its escalation in the islands and adds 368 new cases of coronavirus and four deaths today (Friday), according to data from the Ministry of Health of the Canary Islands updated at 2:00pm.

Gran Canaria once again registered the largest increase with 164 new cases and raises its accumulated total to 12,051. Lanzarote follows with 106 more and reaches 2,361 infections since the start of the pandemic, and Tenerife has 74 with a cumulative total of 14,668. The rest of the cases, 22, have been recorded in Fuerteventura, which has a total of 1,223 positives. There were no new cases in the other islands.

So far this week, the Archipelago has accumulated 1,341 positive cases, which have been concentrated mainly in Gran Canaria (39.97%) and Lanzarote (24.9%), who’s accumulated incidence rates (AI) have also increased notably in the first fifteen days of January. In the last seven days, the accumulated risk in the Canary Islands rises to 96.08 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the accumulated risk of the last 14 days is 163.60 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.

Given the evolution of these data, both islands face new restrictions to stop the spread of infections. The Minister of Health, Blas Trujillo, announced yesterday the rise of Lanzarote to level 3 and the forecast that Gran Canaria could also rise as of this weekend if the trend does not improve, while Fuerteventura entered level 2. This data seems to support the fact that Tenerife will drop to Level 2, and Gran Canaria rise to Level 3 after tomorrows Governing Council meeting.

As for the four deaths, two have taken place in Gran Canaria, which brings the total number of fatalities from the pandemic on the island to 146, and two in Tenerife, which has 295 fatalities. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 462 people have lost their lives on the islands.
