Covid update: 123 new cases, 2 deaths, 80% of target population now fully vaccinated

Covid update: 123 new cases, 2 deaths, 80% of target population now fully vaccinated

The latest data from the Ministry of Health, once again emphasizes the continued downward trend of the epidemiological situation in the Canary Islands, with 123 new cases, but 1,348 people have been medically discharged, including 30 (almost 10%) from Covid wards, meaning that active cases are now below 9,000.

The best news is that the 14-day incidence rate for the islands is now below 100 at 96.65 cases per 100,000 inhabitants after it peaked at 508 on August 3rd when the IA7 also peaked at 254.59. With hospitalisations and incidence rates falling, the risk parameters for the islands are also decreasing, and it is expected that Gran Canaria will move to alert Level 2 tomorrow as its indicators are mostly now at medium risk.

Fuerteventura will also be under review but is expected to stay at Level 3 as it still has the highest incidence rates of 75 and 132 as they keep fluctuating. As for the rest of the islands, Tenerife only moved to Level 3 last Friday and any level changes down are applicable for a minimum of two weeks, so in theory, will stay where it is, and the rest are all safely in Level 1 with the spread of the virus under control.

The main reason for this is the progression of the vaccination campaign in the Canary Islands, which now has 80% of the target population over 12 years old fully vaccinated by the SCS. When you consider that people were predicting that they wouldn’t be vaccinated until October, this is a major achievement by all involved.

However, the health authorities have warned that herd immunity has not been achieved yet because of the Delta variant of the virus. Apart from being more infectious and transmissible, it is the only variant that can be passed on by vaccinated people, accounts for 90% of current cases, and is four times easier to catch if unvaccinated.

Vaccination progress by groups:
At present, Groups 1 to 7 (residents and health and social health personnel of nursing homes; health personnel; large dependents and main caregivers; vulnerable people; groups with essential functions such as teachers and policemen, and people with very high risk conditions) are classed as fully vaccinated, as between 99.5 and 100% of people in these groups have had both doses.

In the rest of the age groups, the situation is as follows:
– Group 8: People between 60 and 65 years old: 82.73% with at least one dose and 63.23% fully vaccinated.

– Group 9: People between 50 and 59 years old: 95.70% with at least one dose and 96.28% fully vaccinated.

– Group 10: People between 40 and 49 years old: 59.50% with at least one dose and 77.05% fully vaccinated (includes those immunized with the Janssen, single-dose vaccine).

– Group 11: People between 30 and 39 years old: 64.09% with at least one dose and 59.01% fully vaccinated.

– Group 12: People between 20 and 29 years old: 59.26% with one dose and 53.59% fully vaccinated.

– Group 13: People between 12 and 19 years old: 73.82% with a dose and 63.69% fully vaccinated.
