Covid update: Signs are that pandemic is being stabilised with 665 new cases today

Although there are definitely positive signs of a downward trend in the spread of the virus in the Canary Islands, it is not time yet to celebrate or relax from obeying restrictions, as there is still a high number of cases, a lot of pressure on hospitals, and people dying. It is also easy to see that it takes a much longer time to bring down all the incidence rates than it took for them to shoot up in the first place.

This is especially evident in the fact that the Delta variant now accounts for 80% of cases in the Canaries, and the average stay in ICU, if a patient survives, is 3 weeks with Covid, so the rest of August is vitally important for everyone so that we can be in a strong position at the start of September.

This was highlighted by the head of the ICU department at the Insular Maternal Hospital in Gran Canaria, José Ángel Alcaraz, who said today that “If this delta variant had caught us without vaccinations, the scenario would have been apocalyptic.”

He also said that “Even young people are not spared from getting seriously ill with Covid. “We are seeing patients in their 20s and 30s. The average age of those admitted to the ICU can be around forty-something years. These young patients were not seen in the first waves.”

It has been well documented that medical staff are getting fed up with anti-vaxxers and deniers, and on that note, Alcaraz added: “I would like the people who are spreading these hoaxes to see the patients that we have are in a very serious condition and are fighting for their lives. There are now many patients, who, at the time of admission, are expressing their regret for having heeded these hoaxes and not being vaccinated.”

On a positive note, Lanzarote has now joined El Hierro and La Palma as the next island to reach 70% of the target population fully immunised with a Covid vaccine. According to the Minister of Health of the Canary Islands, Blas Trujillo, La Gomera will reach 70% of its target population in the next few days, so that only Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura will be short of achieving the long-awaited herd immunity.
