Covid update: Gran Canaria and Lanzarote continue upward trend

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health, the Canary Islands has added 193 new cases of coronavirus today, and five deaths in Tenerife in the last 24 hours that brings the total to 474 fatalities and 302 of them in Tenerife since the pandemic began.

At the moment, the archipelago has 8,163 active cases of Covid-19 of which 60 are admitted to Intensive Care, and 304 are in hospital wards, the rest - 7,912 - are in self isolation at home.

Gran Canaria starts its first day at alert Level 3, confirming the trend of the previous week adding 97 new cases, which represents 50% of the total for today and now has a total of 12,423 accumulated cases since last March, of which 2,373 are still active, and Las Palmas has today passed Santa Cruz as the most infected municipality in the archipelago.

Lanzarote also continues with its growing trend in cases and adds another 52 this Monday, being the second island with the highest increase in cases today, and taking its accumulated total from the beginning of the pandemic to 2,540 with 805 still active.

Between Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, the only two islands now in Alert Level 3, they account for 77% of today’s new cases and account for 39% of active cases.

In the case of Tenerife, which has moved to Level 2 alert from today, the decreasing trend of its new cases continues only 34 new cases registered today. In total, since the beginning of the pandemic, the island has reported 14,798 cases of which 4,720 are still active, which represents 58% of the total active cases in the archipelago. The island also adds 184 medical discharges in the last 24 hours, 63% of the total, meaning actives dropped by 155.

Fuerteventura is positioned this Monday as the fourth island with the highest increase in cases by adding 10 new infections that bring its total to 1,261 of those 231 are still active. La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro have not registered any new cases today.
