The Yaiza Council are taking steps to demolish the Son Bou hotel, located in the main tourist area of Playa Blanca, in the south of Lanzarote, in response to long-standing legal pressures. This action comes after a 2005 court order mandated the demolition of two-thirds of the hotel due to urban planning violations and excessive construction.
The mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, revealed that the Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) recently questioned the council as to why the demolition order has not been carried out. The hotel’s license was revoked for violating planning laws and exceeding allowed construction limits.
Noda stated that due to the owner's inaction, the council has now initiated the process to enforce the demolition order. "We are moving forward because the property owner has ignored the situation. The submitted plans do not meet the requirements, and the responsibility falls on us," Noda explained. He added that they have the execution project ready and will notify the property owner accordingly.
In addition to the Son Bou hotel, Noda highlighted that another hotel owned by the same people, the Princesa Yaiza, is also in a similar state of legal irregularity.
“Previously, a demolition project was submitted to address the non-compliant areas, but only a fraction of the work was completed. Follow-up inspections confirmed that it still does not meet the required standards,” Noda said.
The Princesa Yaiza Hotel in Playa Blanca also violates planning regulations.
