The Feast of the Virgin of Candelaria is one of Tenerife’s most important bank holidays. As it holds island-wide festivo status, most businesses will close for the day, but some essential and tourist-area services continue operating. So, what exactly will be open today, 2nd February?
The date is recognised as an official non-working holiday in Tenerife. However, under a 2011 regulation from the Canary Islands Government, all commercial premises located within Zones of High Tourist Footfall, such as Los Cristianos or Costa Adeje, may freely choose their opening days and hours.
For the hospitality sector, terrace closing times may be extended by one hour compared with the rest of the municipality, both in winter and summer.
What Opens on 2nd February in Tenerife?
Essential Services
As always, healthcare staff, police, firefighters, and private security personnel continue working as normal.
Pharmacies on duty will remain open, along with those that operate 365 days a year. Residents can check local on-call pharmacies by municipality via the official listings.
Bakeries
Large bakery franchises such as El Horno de Pan and El Rincón del Pan will open as usual, along with many small independent bakeries.
24-Hour Shops
These convenience-style mini-supermarkets generally stay open and will operate on their normal schedules.
Bars and Cafés
Opening is at the discretion of each owner. As public holidays often bring increased customer traffic, many bars, cafés, and restaurants choose to open.
Petrol Stations
Not all will open, but many service stations do operate on public holidays. It’s advisable to check in advance which stations in your area will be open.
Shopping Centres
In tourist zones where Sunday and holiday trading is permitted, shopping centres may open. This includes locations such as:
- Siam Mall (Costa Adeje)
- Rosa Center (Playa Paraiso)
- Martiánez Shopping Centre (Puerto de la Cruz)
Supermarkets
Some supermarkets in tourist areas will open, but major chains — Mercadona, Alcampo, Aldi, Carrefour, and Lidl — have confirmed they will be closed all day.
Local Canarian supermarket chains, such as Hiperdino, will keep most branches open, with limited exceptions in residential areas.
Because a shopping centre may open, some privately owned shops within it will close, it’s best to check each retailer’s updated opening hours online before making plans.
