The Canary Islands will once again be affected by calima today, Wednesday, as a warm, dusty haze from the Sahara brings reduced visibility and temperatures reaching up to 34°C, particularly in the southern and western midlands of Gran Canaria, according to the latest reports from AEMET.

The hot, dry air mass will mainly affect higher altitudes, while strong northeasterly winds are also forecast, reaching force 7 offshore in some areas. The sea will be rough, with swells from the northwest of between one and two metres, prompting authorities to urge caution along the coasts.

Island forecast highlights:

LANZAROTE AND FUERTEVENTURA:
Mostly clear with some clouds early and late in the day. Light calima at high altitude and moderate northeast winds, occasionally strong inland. Highs of 28°C in Arrecife and 25°C in Puerto del Rosario.

GRAN CANARIA:
Cloudy in the north during the morning, clearing later. Clear elsewhere with light calima, especially over higher ground. Temperatures rising, with 30°C common across the south and west, and peaks of 34°C possible. Strong northeast winds with very strong gusts on the southeast and northwest coasts, easing by midday.

TENERIFE:
Cloudy in the north early and late in the day, otherwise mostly clear. Slight calima possible at high levels. Temperatures climbing slightly, especially in mid-altitude areas, with highs around 29°C. Strong northeast winds easing later.

The regional government has placed parts of the archipelago on pre-alert due to the combination of high temperatures, strong winds, and poor air quality. Residents and tourists are advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during peak heat, and take extra care at sea and on the roads.
