Tragedy of first drowning of the year with one dead and another rescued with hypothermia

Just before midday yesterday (Tuesday), the Canary Islands Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) received a distress call reporting two people in trouble at Playa Viejo Rey beach, La Pared, in the municipality of Pájara (Fuerteventura).

Emergency resources were immediately dispatched to the location given, where a GES helicopter retrieved the body of one of the people in trouble, a 44-year-old man who had succumbed to drowning and pronounced dead.

Lifeguards at the beach managed to save the other victim, a 19-year-old young man, who was suffering from hypothermia and anxiety. After being checked over by medical personnel he was transported by ambulance to the General Hospital of Fuerteventura.

Pájara firefighters collaborated in the rescue operations, while the Local Police assisted the emergency services and took charge of the deceased's body until the arrival of the judicial authorities, who ordered an autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
