The new DGT traffic law sets the alcohol level at 0.0 for some drivers

The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) have said they are committed to preventing road accidents with deaths caused mainly by non-compliance with drink driving laws and speeding, with the implementation of the new Traffic Law which includes changes in the blood alcohol level allowed for driving, and sanctions that can include fines of up to 1,000 euros, with the most serious cases punishable by prison terms.

The new Traffic Law came into force in March of this year so this is the first Christmas that the new laws will apply. Driver awareness of the dangers of drink driving has indeed increased, and it is no longer common for someone to get behind the wheel after consuming a large amount of alcohol.

However, it is still normal for some people to get behind the wheel after having drunk one beer or having toasted with a glass of cava or champagne at a Christmas party.

For this reason, it is important to note that the DGT has modified the permitted blood alcohol level for some specific drivers, such as those under 18 years of age, who, although they cannot drive cars, can drive other types of vehicles such as electric scooters, mopeds, and micro cars, and this measure will be even more applicable when the new B1 permit comes into force next year, which will allow young people aged 16 and over to drive different types of urban electric vehicles.

It is also important to remember that the alcohol level allowed for other drivers is 0.25 mg/litre, while for professional drivers and drivers who have just passed their test, it is 0.15 mg/litre.

The fines for not complying with these rates are 500 euros and 4 points if you are over 0.25 mg/litre, and 1,000 euros and 6 points in the case of repeat offenders or if you test higher than 0.5 mg/litre of breath.
