The Canary Islands are home to some of Spain’s most dramatic landscapes, where roads are not just routes from A to B, but experiences in their own right. Among them, one stands out for both its breathtaking beauty and its notorious difficulty: the GC-200 in Gran Canaria.
Winding along the island’s rugged west coast, this road has earned a reputation as one of the most spectacular, and challenging, drives in the world.
A Route Carved Through Extremes
The GC-200 links key locations such as Mogán, La Aldea de San Nicolás and Agaete, stretching for more than 70 kilometres through some of the island’s most untouched terrain.
Drivers pass through stark volcanic landscapes, dry inland valleys and dramatic coastal sections where the Atlantic Ocean runs alongside the road. The constantly changing scenery is part of what makes the journey so memorable, and so demanding.
The Road of 365 Bends
Nicknamed the “road of 365 curves”, the GC-200 is defined by its relentless twists and turns. While the number is symbolic, the experience is very real: tight bends, steep gradients and continuous changes in elevation demand full concentration behind the wheel.
The most demanding section lies between La Aldea and Agaete, where around 30 kilometres of winding road cling to cliffs that drop sharply into the sea.
Stunning — and Unforgiving
What makes this road extraordinary is also what makes it dangerous. Much of the route runs along high cliffs, offering sweeping ocean views but leaving little margin for error.
The stretch between the Andén Verde viewpoint and El Risco is particularly well known for its narrow lanes and sharp corners. Rockfalls have also been a recurring issue over the years, adding to the risk for drivers.

For decades, parts of the road lacked basic safety barriers, contributing to a history of serious accidents and shaping its reputation as one of the most hazardous routes in the Canary Islands.
In response to safety concerns, authorities developed an alternative route to reduce traffic on the most dangerous sections. This newer road has improved everyday travel for residents and transport.
However, the original GC-200 remains a magnet for motorists, cyclists and bikers seeking one of the most iconic drives in the Canary Islands.
More Than Just a Road
Today, the GC-200 is not simply a road, it is an experience. Its mix of sharp curves, towering cliffs and panoramic Atlantic views offers a journey unlike any other in Spain.
For those who take it on, one thing is clear: this is a road to be respected as much as it is admired.
