The Canary Islands are one of the top holiday hotspots for visitors from around the world, however, there is much more to the islands than sun, sea, sand, and sangria!
It goes quite under the radar how many great celebrities have been born in the Canary Islands. Whether it's footballers, actors, actresses or directors, we have birthed some icons.
When we talk about current famous people, there aren't many bigger than Pedri. Born in Tenerife but coming from the Las Palmas football academy he got his big move to Barcelona at a young age and since then has lit up the La Liga. When he was 18, he seemed to be the best player Barcelona and Spain had, playing over 73 matches in the 2020/21 season.
This overplaying has come at a cost, as even though he is arguably one of the best midfielders in the world, he is picking up more injuries than people would hope for. His injury at the Euros resulted in Dani Olmo stepping up and becoming one of the stars in the tournament.
Javier Bardem is one of the best actors in the world and of this generation. The son of famous Spanish actress Pilar Bardem, it is safe to say that he has eclipsed his mother's career and has solidified himself in the history books.
Born in Gran Canaria, he started his career in Spanish only films, before getting his global breakout role in Before Night Falls in 2000, Since then he has been a staple in some of the best films of the last 20 years including a great performance in Skyfall opposite Daniel Craig in 2012.
He has multiple Oscar nominations and an Oscar win for ‘No Country For Old Men’, and seems to only be getting better as his career progresses. With the release of Dune 2 having huge success, it feels like he is the favourite for a supporting actor Oscar nomination. If you want to bet on someone to win, like how you can bet for free on bingo sites no deposit, he is the obvious choice and our personal favourite.
From one icon to another, David Silva is not only a Spanish icon but an icon in all of football. He started his football career at Valencia's academy and after a few short loans to other Spanish clubs, he gained his spot in Valencia's first team.
After spending 5 years as a starter, he joined Manchester City in 2010 and was a part of one of the summers that changed the club forever. He spearheaded the start of Manchester City's massive success and left the club and the Premier League as a certified legend and a future Hall of Famer.
Born in Tenerife, Fresnadillo is among some of the biggest Spanish film exports in the world having had a solid 20+ year career in Hollywood, so far. In 1996 his short film, Esosados, was nominated for Best Live Action Short and although he didn't win, this put his great work in the limelight in front of some of the biggest celebrities in the world.
His biggest film to date is the sequel to the Danny Boyle zombie film 28 Days Later. When 28 Weeks Later was released, it had a major buzz and was loved by fans of the original. This gave Fresnadillo the ability to work with some huge actors like Jeremy Renner and now over 17 years after the release, he is still working with big actors today.
His most recent release, Damsel starring Millie Bobby Brown, Angela Bassett and Ray Winstone was met with mixed reviews but still did well for Netflix. Even without the critic's success, the commercial success alone will likely grant him more major films which is always good news.
