The hottest day in March in the Canary Islands since records began

The Tasarte weather station, in La Aldea de San Nicolás in Gran Canaria, has registered a new all-time high temperature for the month of March in the Canary Islands with 37.8 degrees recorded at 2:20pm yesterday, Thursday 30th March, which smashed the previous record set 72 years ago in 1951 when records began.

The new historical high comes after the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) activated an orange weather warning in Gran Canaria, due to high temperatures of 37 degrees, for the first time ever in March. The rest of the islands are on yellow alert for temperatures expected to reach 34 degrees.

The yellow weather warning for high temperatures will be maintained today (Friday), both in Gran Canaria and in the rest of the islands until 8:00pm tonight.

Yesterday, the Canary Islands topped the list of highest temperatures in all of Spain for the second day running, and in fact, filled nine of the top ten spots ranging from 37.8 degrees in Gran Canaria to 34.5 in Fuerteventura, and Novelda (Alicante) which was tenth on the list with 34.3 degrees.
