The Plaza Commercial Centre is getting ready to partially reopen soon

The Plaza Commercial Centre in Playa del Inglés in Gran Canaria has been closed under a ‘municipal seal’ since February 2022, and the owners don’t want to let another summer of tourists go by without being open. The managers of the complex have now finalized the procedures to reopen the facilities, all be it partially.

At first, the shops on the upper level, followed by the pubs and clubs at the base of the iconic escalators will be allowed to open, but the underground car park, which is privately owned spaces and not for public use, will remain closed until further issues are sorted.

The community intended to reopen the Plaza just after Easter but had to postpone this date, but on this occasion, they have already informed owners to get ready to reopen their businesses so that they are prepared in advance for the imminent reconnection of the electricity by Endesa.

The community has already handed over the project to reform the electrical installations of the complex to the Ministry of Energy (formerly the Ministry of Industry), and also the OCA certificate corresponding to the part of the commercial centre that will benefit from the partial reopening.

They are also in the process of providing the same documents to the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council, with a formal request to unseal the building so that it can reopen.

The centre has been closed since a fire broke out in one of the businesses on 31st  January 2021 that ended up causing damage to the entire electrical installation of the complex, which is why Endesa cut off the supply to demand a reform costing 400,000 euros.

For a few months, the clubs continued to open thanks to two generators, but the City Council sealed them off in November 2021 and, definitively, in February 2022, a closure that this time affected the entire commercial centre.
