Benijo Beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife is set to reopen to the public in summer 2026, after being closed for more than two years due to dangerous rockfalls in the Anaga mountains.
The iconic black-sand beach was shut in July 2024 after technical reports warned of instability in the surrounding cliffs. Now, the local council has confirmed that safety works aimed at stabilising the area are scheduled to begin before summer 2026, once all remaining administrative procedures are completed.
Carlos Tarife, the councillor for Public Services and first deputy mayor, told local media that the project is now fully underway at the planning level. The works will include major slope-stabilisation measures designed to eliminate the risk that forced the beach’s closure.
The operation carries a €2.1 million budget, funded entirely by the Government of the Canary Islands. The council intends to launch the project through its municipal framework agreement, designed to shorten deadlines and speed up the delivery of strategic works.
According to council technicians, a viable engineering solution has been identified to secure the unstable cliff face and ensure safe public access once the beach reopens.
