Maintenance workers from the Las Palmas Council have been working tirelessly to remove seaweed from the La Puntilla and Peña La Vieja areas of Las Canteras Beach, which has had huge deposits left on the sand by recent strong winds, waves, and currents.
The City Council has reported that yesterday (Tuesday), approximately 18 tons of organic matter were removed from the beach. The cleanup efforts have continued this morning with the help of a tractor and two trucks.
The Council explained that these efforts are aimed at ensuring the safety of beachgoers by preventing the buildup of seaweed on the sand. Additionally, the removal of this organic matter is essential to protect the well-being of residents, local businesses, and beach users due to the potential issues associated with its decomposition.
This natural phenomenon is known to occur periodically during periods of strong tides and storms. In the northern coastal strip, which includes Las Canteras and El Confital, this seasonal phenomenon is linked to northwest winds during this time of year.
