Two Londoners, Antonia Good and Annabel Lewis, have landed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, but not for the sun-soaked beaches or the island’s tourist attractions, but for the magnetic draw of Gran Canaria’s musical sensation, Quevedo.
Quevedo is a prominent Spanish singer and songwriter known for his unique blend of reggaeton, trap, and Latin pop. Hailing from Gran Canaria, he gained widespread recognition with his collaboration with Bizarrap on the hit track "Quédate," which cemented his status as a leading figure in the contemporary Latin music scene.
Antonia first discovered Quevedo while living in Seville, and describes his music as the soundtrack to her happiest memories with friends. Annabel, despite not speaking Spanish, finds herself singing along to his hits without understanding the lyrics.
"In Mezclaito, a Spanish club in Chelsea, Quevedo's music is always playing. I sing it, even if I don't know what I'm saying. I just feel it," she said.
Both women agree that Quevedo's music offers an energy that is hard to find in the UK music scene. "British music can be quite cold and melancholic. With Quevedo, you just want to dance and smile," says Annabel.
Quevedo's growing fame in the UK is not lost on Antonia. "His popularity is increasing," she says. The pair regularly visit Mezcalito, a lively Latin bar, where a large Spanish community in London gathers. "Whenever one of Quevedo's songs comes on, all our friends start singing and dancing, even if they don’t know Spanish," Antonia explains.
For these friends, attending Quevedo's concert is about creating memories. "It's our first time seeing him live, and we wanted to experience it here, in his home," says Antonia, who snapped up tickets as soon as they were available.
Annabel adds her own sentiment: "I've fallen in love with the culture here because it's so different from London. It's refreshing to be completely immersed in everything, there are so many beautiful restaurants everywhere," she enthuses.
While their visit centres on the concert, they also see it as an opportunity to unwind. "We don't want to do much sightseeing. We want to enjoy traditional local food, soak up some sun, and experience the island's atmosphere," Antonia added
The anticipation builds as the duo get ready for the much-awaited concert at the Estadio de Gran Canaria tomorrow night (Saturday). The event, which has sparked excitement since the promotional posters featuring the phrase "Quevedo plays at home" appeared, promises to be a memorable occasion for everyone.
