As the festive shopping season gets into full swing across the Canary Islands, the National Police have stepped up their presence in busy commercial and leisure areas to ensure a safe Christmas for both residents and visitors.

The enhanced security deployment forms part of the long-running “Safe Shopping Plan”, first launched in 2013, which is intensified every December to prevent crime targeting shoppers and local businesses during the busiest time of the year.

Stronger presence where crowds gather

Throughout the Christmas campaign, more uniformed officers will be stationed in shopping districts, retail centres, Christmas markets, and popular nightlife spots. Additional policing plans have been drawn up by provincial headquarters to reduce thefts, robberies, pickpocketing, and other offences that typically occur at this time of year.

Authorities say the increased visibility will help deter criminals while offering reassurance to the public, particularly in areas attracting large numbers of tourists and late-night revellers.

Working directly with businesses

Community outreach units will also play a key role, maintaining direct contact with shop owners, business associations, and customers. Police say strengthening communication helps retailers take a more active role in protecting their premises and staff.

This collaborative approach ensures that traders receive not only a regular police presence but also faster, more effective support when needed.

Safety guides handed out

Alongside the increased patrols, officers will distribute leaflets and guides about security to merchants across the islands, which contain practical advice covering every stage of commercial activity, from purchasing and delivery to in-store selling, online payments, and handling customer data.

The leaflets highlight common criminal tactics and explain how to respond correctly if a crime occurs, including when and how to report it.

Some key police recommendations include:

  • Use electronic payment methods wherever possible
  • Install counterfeit banknote detectors
  • Handle personal data in line with current regulations
  • Be alert to individuals behaving suspiciously
  • Always rely on authorised professionals for any security installations
  • Do not touch anything if you witness or suffer a crime
  • If your business is found open or forced, do not enter – call 091 immediately

The National Police stress that the retail sector is vital to the Canary Islands’ economy. Ensuring safe shopping environments, they say, protects both local livelihoods and the financial wellbeing of the region during one of the most important times of the year.
