A 60-year-old German paraglider is in a serious condition after falling around 20 metres from a cliff near La Cantería beach in Órzola, Lanzarote this morning (Tuesday). The accident happened at around 11 am and led to a major emergency response due to the severity of his injuries and the difficult terrain.

According to the Canary Islands Emergency Coordination Centre (CECOES) 112, the man suffered multiple serious trauma injuries when he crashed into the rocky area below the cliff. Emergency teams reached the area quickly, and due to the location, firefighters, Civil Protection officers and the Local Police carried out the initial rescue to reach and stabilise the injured man.

While the GES helicopter was activated to assist in the operation, the man was ultimately evacuated to a waiting medicalised ambulance once stabilised. Paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) confirmed he had sustained serious multiple injuries and transferred him to Hospital Doctor José Molina Orosa in Arrecife under advanced life support.

Several emergency services assisted in the rescue, including basic and advanced life support ambulances, Emerlan volunteers, firefighters from the Lanzarote Emergency Consortium, Civil Protection teams and Haría Local Police.

This is the latest in a series of paragliding incidents across the Canary Islands in recent months. Earlier this autumn, a pilot in Yaiza was rescued after strong winds pushed him off course, and in Tenerife, several emergency callouts have been logged in popular flying areas in the south.

Rescue teams continue to warn that sudden gusts and coastal wind changes can turn a routine flight into a dangerous situation in seconds.
